Spyware, Parasites or hijacking is an invasion of privacy. Some Spyware programs such as Cydoor, Gator, Lop.com and Xupiter install without the user's knowledge by piggybacking on peer-to-peer file-sharing programs (example - Kazza), executable images or a long list of freeware.
Spyware is primarily used for advertising purposes because it tracks a user's Web habits. Some Spyware will drop cookies on your computer, while some game software has been know to install spyware while you are installing the game. Some programs even log keystrokes and capture and transmit screen images. These programs are hard to avoid because they come bundled with other programs and it is not always apparent to the user that they are installing Spyware. Spyware is designed to avoid un-installs, it leaves behind stuff you can not get rid of because it is buried in the registry The novice user usually needs a professional to remove it.
Computer parasites are any programs that get installed on your computer which you never ask for and do not want.
Hijacking is most common among browsers. Your browser settings, usually your home page and/or search page are changed. The purpose of browser hijacking is to force you to visit a web site chosen by the hijacker.
